Arnold Circus Drawings
after Leon Kossoff
by Year 6, Virginia Primary School

17 July - 17 August 2013

An exhibition of twenty-four drawings by Year 6 children from Virginia Primary School made during their visit to the Leon Kossoff exhibition 'London Landscapes' at  Annely Juda Fine Art. The drawings were made in response to Kossoff's charcoal and pastel drawings of Arnold Circus.

Virginia Primary is situated on the north-west side of Arnold Circus and appears in some of Kossoff's drawings. The children, who have mainly grown up around Arnold Circus, were fascinated to see the familiar bandstand and surrounding gardens and buildings depicted, and their drawings are filled with the movement and energy of Kossoff's drawings.

Leon Kossoff was born in Shoreditch in 1926 and came back to draw Arnold Circus between 2008 and 2012.

'Kossoff's return to Arnold Circus, on the Boundary Estate where he grew up, has seen a flurry of new work. He knows the area well, though it is of course different now: he went to school in a building on the south side of the Circus (now artists' studios), and his father's bakery was round the corner in Calvert Avenue.' Andrea Rose (selected text from the 'London Landscapes' catalogue)

Alice Herrick, Director of Herrick Gallery is also a Trustee of the  Friends of Arnold Circus  and lead the children's visit to see the Leon Kossoff exhibition.
Herrick Gallery is just off Shoreditch High Street on the west side. Arnold Circus is situated two minutes away to the east of Shoreditch High Street.

With thanks to Leila McAlister for instigating this project, and to Kate Gooding, Salma Haris and Mahmuda Jaigirdar of Virginia Primary School.
